Immigration Statement of Changes – October 2025
Today’s Statement of Changes brings a mix of immediate shifts and long-term signals. Here’s what’s new — and what’s coming:
Visa Requirement for Botswana Nationals
Effective 3pm today, Botswana nationals now require a visa to enter the UK. This change aims to stem the rise in asylum claims and aligns with broader efforts to tighten border controls.
Immigration Skills Charge Increase
From 16 December 2025, the Immigration Skills Charge will rise by 32% — a significant cost increase for UK sponsors under the Skilled Worker and Senior/Specialist Worker routes.
English Language Requirement Raised
From 8 January 2026, the minimum English level for certain routes will increase from B1 to B2 (CEFR scale) — roughly equivalent to A-Level English. This affects routes where English proficiency is mandatory, including settlement and some work visas.
Graduate Route Reduction Delayed
The proposed cut to the Graduate visa duration (from 2 years to 18 months) won’t take effect until 2027. For now, the current 2-year post-study permission remains unchanged.
High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa Expansion
The HPI route now welcomes graduates from 100 top international universities, up from 50 previously. This broadens access for global talent and signals continued support for high-skilled migration.
